THREE CALLS

Fires in Ashburton Throe calls to fires were answered by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade over the weekend, the most serious outbreak occurring at Tuarangi Home in the early hours this morning. A chain of macrocarpa hedge about 14 foot in height and half that again in width, was burned out on the frontage of the institution. Grass on both sides of the fence threatened to spread the fire, but, fortunately there was no wind to hurry the flames along. , , The Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to the call at 1.50 a.m., and dispatched two machines. Water was pumped from an adjacent creek, 200 feet of hose being run out, and the blaze was controlled in half an hour. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. Burning rubbish and grass on an empty section at 103 Cox Street resulted in a call to the brigade at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday. , The blaze was quickly extinguished. A small fire in a macrocarpa fence and grass, near the corner of Cox and Victoria Streets, at 1.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon, was also put out by the brigade. Little damage was done.
