VIRUS OF INFLUENZA

STUDY PLANNED BY AUSTRALIA

CANBERRA, January 12,

The Commonwealth Health Department has sent a cablegram to London asking for samples of the virus strain of influenza which Is now sweeping Southern Europe. When the samples are received they will be compared by the noted Australian influenza authority, Professor F. M. Burnett, of Melbourne, with the types already classified in Australia. If the virus is a new type, arrangements will he made immediately for the manufacture of vaccines at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories, for preventive inoculation. The main danger of the disease is the possibility of its introduction by aircraft, but there is proteqtion in the fact that the incubation period for influenza is in most cases 24 to 48 hours.
