RECRUITING DRIVE

SOME TRADE UNIONS REPORTED HOSTILE LONDON, Jan. 12. The Minister of Defence, Mr E. Shinwell, is disturbed about the attitude of some trades councils because they are hostile to recruiting. Mr Shinwell, after a private meeting at Bristol, said this to reporters. He said he had asked the Trades Union Congress to use it© influence to persuade all its affiliated bodies, to aid recruiting.

Mr Shinwell said although lie was desperately anxious to make the recruiting drive a success, he was not prepared to create alarm and despondency to effect it. Recruiting, lie said, was approaching tlie 70,000 mark of the target of 150,000. Recruiting for the regular army was better now than between the two wars.
