UNLAWFUL LANDING

FIVE YOUNG DUTCHMEN

CHARGED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day.

“I am concerned about putting these young men in prison for a number of months,” said Mr A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, in remanding on bail until February 10 five young Dutchmen charged with having unlawfully landed in New Zealand when they were prohibited immigrants under the Immigration Restriction Amendment Act, 1920. Charges of having deserted their ship, Alfred Clegg, were dismissed.

Counsel for accused said their application to the Customs Department to see if their arrival could be regularised was being held up for lack of police reports from Holland. When these arrived they might be granted permits to stay.
