DISSIDENT GROUP
VICTORIAN COUNTRY PARTY •MELBOURNE, January 11. A split in the Victorian Country Party has resulted in a group of members openly breaking* away to support the Hollway Government. The breakaway group of six led by Messrs H. J. T. Hyland, M.L.A., and J. 11. Leinhop, M.L.C., refused to attend a conference to-day between the central council and the political party. Two other Country Party members may also join the breakaway group. IThis would give the Government a voting strength of 33 to 30. There was no indication to-day that the breakaway members would join the Liberal Party or even become the nucleus of a Liberal Country League. The Premier . (Mr T. T. Hollway) said it was premature to talk of the Government making any provision to allow some of the breakaways to enter the Cabinet.
The leader of the Country Party (Mr J. G. McDonald) described the breakaway as “treason.”
