BEER FOR VOTERS ONLY

(By Air Mail.) ADELAIDE. Bottled beer which was in short supply throughout Christmas and New Year holidays in Australia was rationed by hotelkeepers. Some adopted novel means of effecting an equitable distribution to their customers. Perhaps the most original and fair means was that employed at the Renmark Hotel, South Australia. The Renmark Hotel is a community hotel, its profits being devoted to providing buildings, gardens and other amenities to improve the town. The hotel arranged that if a person was on the electoral roll he was entitled to purchase three bottles of beer. For three days two men sat at windows, each with half an electoral roll and a pencil. One window was marked “A to L,” the other “M to Z.” As local residents collected their beer chits their names were marked off the electoral roll. The management would not disclose how many bottles of beer had been sold.—Reuter.
