JAPANESE EMPEROR

HIS DUTY AS A LEADER

(Rec. 11.0 a.m.) TOKIO, Jan. 10, General MacArthur told Emperor Hirohito to-day that the occupying Powers do not expect his Majesty to abdicate or to share responsibility for for war. Japanese sources reported that the Emperor called on General MacArthur at the American Embassy. United States officials merely described the meeting as “a routine calling.” Japanese sources said that General MacArthur did most of the talking, touching on the economic situation and need for an all-out effort by the Japanese to become self-supporting as rapidly as possible. General MacArthui is reported to have emphasised that the Emperor’s role was no longer one of a political or divine nature, hut rather that of a leader who .must show tlie~ Japanese masses the right way.
