FIFTY YEARS SYNE
(From the “Guardian,” Jan. 11, 1899). Literary Society —The usual weekly meeting of the Ashburton Catholic Literary Society was held in the Catjiolic Boys’ Schoolroom last evening. There “was a large attendance of members, and the president (Mr F. Cooper) occupied the chair. The programme for the evening, entitled “A Trial by Jury,” was proceeded with anci caused much amusement. For next Wednesday evening, Mr A. J. Muller has kindly consented to give a lecture on his trip to America.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
(From the “Guardian,” Jan. 11, 1924). Personal —Mr H. J. Constable, who left Ashburton last March in order to visit the Mother Country, has received a commission from a London firm of publishers to write an outline histoyy of New Zealand. It 'is intended that the book be published coincident with the opening of the British Empire Exhibition. It is hoped that the Prime Minister, Mr W. F. Massey, will write a foreword. Mr Constable lias been writing a series of signed articles on New Zealand for the London “Morning Post,” and he has written for other papers. An article on “What Refrigeration has meant to New Zealand” appeared below his name in a recent number of a trade paper.
