FIFTY YEARS SYNE

(From-the “Guardian,” Jan. 10, 1899). New Ironmongery Firm —Mr Geo. Meddins has bought out Mr William Congreve, the ironmonger, who for some time has carried on business in one of the new shops in Lane’s Buildings (Somerset), Burnett Street, and has entered into possession. Mr Meddins has been in Ashburton for a number of years, and came to town under engagement as an ironmonger to Messrs Friedlander, 15 years ago.. In that capacity he remained until Mr H. Zander took over the business. He subsequently joined Mr J. Hardley in business.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 10, 1924). Presentation —Mr „E. Bell, of Tinwald, was the recipient of a gold medal, inscribed from his fellow taxidrivers on the East Street stand this morning. The presentation was made in recognition of Mr Bell’s having made the top average, of 26 and 23, in the recent second grade representative cricket match between Ashburton and Christchurch City and Suburban, played on January 2, 1924.
