CHILDREN’S SHOES

LICENCES FOR IMPORTATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. “Licences for the import of children's boots and shoes, sizes 0 to. 9, from the United Kingdom are being granted up to 100 per cent, of the amount of licences issued for the import of similar goods from the same source in 1948,” said the Minister of Customs (the Kt. Hon. W. Nash) commenting to-day on a_ report that no more licences are being granted for the importation of shoes. “The importation of children’s boots and shoes of these types is necessary to supplement local production, which is inadequate. “Shoes, other than children’s Sport designs, composed of canvas with rubber soles solutioned to the uppers are included in a different part of the customs tariff, and this is shown as ‘deferred’ in the import licensing schedule for the 1949 period. The question of whether any provision will ultimately be made for the import of this class of footwear will depend on the extent, to which our requirements can be obtained from New Zealand manufacturers. “Leather footwear for adults and also children’s leather shoes of sizes above 9 are included under the item of ‘boots and shoes H.E.I. ’ N.E.I. means not indicated elsewhere. “No allocation has been provided in the import licensing schedule for the importation of footwear of these , types, requirements, of which have been met by New Zealand industry.”
