DAMAGE BY HAIL

ORCHARDS NEAR HASTINGS

(P.A.) HASTINGS, January 9. For tile second time within a week, Hawke’s Bay received a thorough drenching yesterday afternoon from rain which was accompanied by thunder, lightning, and, in places, hail. The, downpour was experienced throughout the province and for nearly an hour it was torrential, causing some surface flooding. The worst feature was the damage done to fruit 4 by hail within a comparatively small area at Twyford. Here hailstones varying in size from a pea to a marble cut and bruised fruit to an extent that it will not be possible to assess fully until it gains more maturity. , It is certain that growers in the affedted. area will have to have some of their produce regraded, and some of it may be a complete loss. The main growing area at Havelock North and at Pakowhai escaped the hail.
