Progressive 500 i The winners of the 500 tournament held on Saturday night by the Social Committee of the Women’s Section of the R.S.A. were Mrs Box and Mr .T. Crysell. Ploughing Match at Hinds With a view to encouraging a ploughing match shortly to ha staged by the Hinds Young Farmers’ Club, the Ashburton A. and P. Association yesterday decided to make a donation of £2 2s toward the club funds. Ashburton’s Ram Fair “Labour costs each year are more than would be sufficient to pay for a complete set of new yards,” remarked Mr R. T. Latimer, at yesterday’s meeting of the Ashburton A. and P. Association, when commenting on the results of the recent ram fair. It was mentioned that the profit at Ashburton was £IOO less than that at Timarii. After further brief discussion, the chairman of the sheep committee (Mr F. P. Cooksbn) was empowered to confer with the Timaru association regarding its conduct of fairs. Later a sub-committee was set up to inspect and recommend alterations to the accommodation at the showgrounds.

New York to Ashburton — Days In contrast to the seven months which some bundles of newspapers took to come by mail from Palmerston South to Ashburton (as mentioned in yesterday’s “Guardian ) is a period of four and a half days which an air mail letter took to •come from New York to a local resident. Posted in New York on Thursday last at 4 p.m. (which corresponds to Friday, 8 30 a.m., New Zealand time), the letter reached its Ashburton address at 8 o’clock last evening. Officials, at the Ashburton Post Office said this morning' that this was “good going” for mail addressed to this town, considering that 24 hours of that time was required for the letter to come here from Auckland. In Wellington and Auckland, however, it was not unusual to find that writers of air mail letters to London received replies in less than a week,
