FLOODS IN GISBORNE
SETTLERS CRITICISE WEATHER FORECASTS (P.A.) GISBORNE, This Day. Much criticism of the forecasts issued by the Meteorological Office has lieen voiced by settlers in the flooded areas since the week-end. Reports issued on Monday evening and yesterday were described as an effort to catch up on the situation which developed without adequate warning.
The broadcast warning on Monday night of heavy rain in the backcountry, and stressing the possibility of renewed flooding, caused a number of settlers to evacuate their homes again yesterday for a second time in three days.
The highest point to which the Waipaoa River rose yesterday as a result of rain was eight feet, compared with 31 feet in the big spillover last weekend.
