HEAVY SEAS IN LYTTELTON
MINOR DAMAGE TO PIER (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, May IS. The sea in Lyttelton Harbour to-day was the heaviest for more than 20 years after two days of strong northeasterly winds. At times seas near the Heads were breaking right across the harbour and all about the outer harbour seas were breaking high on the shore.
Minor damage was done at Gladstone Pier, where breaking seas scoured the ballasting from about two chains of railway line, and distributed shingle over other lines. Because of the scouring the steamer express train from Christchurch this evening had to be divided before being taken on to the steamer express wharf. Although she arrived at Lyttelton on time this morning, the Hinemoa had a rough trip from south of Kaikoura to Lyttelton. A heavy following sea made conditions uncomfortable for all on board.
The passenger launch service to Diamond Harbour was maintained today, but no other launches were running, and no trawlers put to sea.
