FORMER PUPILS HONOURED
The unveiling of the Chertsey School Roll of Honour, containing 34 names of pupils who served overseas in the Second World War was unveiled in the school yesterday.
Mr W. H. Wilkinson was the chairman of the ceremony, which was well attended. The ceremony opened with the New Zealand Anthem, followed by the unveiling of the roll by Mrs E. Dunstan. and the placing of a wreath by Mr R. L. Chapman. An interval of silence was then observed, at the end of which the Act of Dedication service was read by the Rev. Read. The hymn "“0 God of Love, O King of Peaces” was then sung. Mr Wilkinson, in his address, stressed that harmony and goodwill q.nd cooperation, which were a part of our Christian lives, should be put into effect by all. Each individual should play his part as a cog in a well-working machine. Where would they be, he asked, if the servicemen had not pulled together in co-operation and harmony and so brought the war to an end. And so they had gathered to pay homage to those who had served, Mr Wilkinson concluded. Mr W. V. Joyce, president of the, Ashburton R.S.A., extended on behalf of the R.S.A. sympathy to those who had suffered loss in the war, and paid tribute to those who had done so much for patriotic efforts, so bringing comfort to those who had served. Demoncratic Principles Mr Joyce stated that the democratic principles which all fought for, freedom of speech and freedom from want, should be upheld by all. There was need for all to co-operate and go forward in.harmony toward a goal, which was peace. They should go forward with God and leave selfishness behind, and so be worthy of those who fought for them. On behalf of the services of the county, Mr Joyce extended' thanks to all who helped to provide a lasting monument to commemorate those who had served.
Mr A. Doig replied for the Second N.Z.E.F., and thanked all citizens who had subscribed and made the day possible. Mr Doig also extended thanks to those who forwarded parcels overseas. He hoped they would never again be called on to unveil another war memorial.
The ceremony closed with the National Anthem.
