WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT METHVEN ; The annual meeting of the Methven Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs S. M. Jackman. The secretary reported that as a result of the garden party the sum of £5 7s 9d was added to the institute funds, and a vote of thanks was accorded Mrs A. G. Candy for the use of the grounds. As a result of the Poppy Day appeal, held on Methven ewe fair day, the sum of £2O was collected for the R.S.A. funds. Mrs D. Chambers’ gift of a framed copy of the aspirations was accepted With thanks. The gift cake for April was placed in the hands of Mrs G. Waddington, with Mesdames Lock, R. Weenink, and J. Paulin as helpers. Mesdames Jackman and Mclntosh Were elected delegatee to the annual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation, and it was agreed to support the remit to reduce the federation pool. The roll call “Ways with Tomatoes’’ was well responded to. The president, in referring to the forthcoming children’s fancy dress ball asked for members’ full support, especially for supper arrangements. Mesdames D. Middleton, G. Gordon and R. R. Wood were elected as members. Most points for the year in competitions was won by Mrs A. G. Candy, with Mrs R. Ireland second, and Mrs Morgan third. The monthly competitions, judged by Mesdames Sounness and A. Wilson, resulted: Bloom, Mesdames G. Walsh 1, Grieve 2, J. Paulin 3; vase of asters, Mesdames S. M. Jackman 1, N. Mclntosh 2, W. R. Morgan 3; bowl of dahlias, Mesdames Grieve 1, R. Ireland 2, S. M. Jackman 3; tomato sauce, Mesdames NV Mclntosh 1, Grieve 2, G. Waddington 3; sandwich dish, Mesdames S. M. Jackman 1, R. Lock 2, J. Paulin 3; gooseberry jam, Mesdames L. Vaughan 1, W. R. Morgan 2, G. Walsh 3. The most points for the day were Green 44, Gold 20. Mrs R. Pearce, Ashburton, presided for the business of the annual meeting and congratulated the institute on its successful year. She also referred to the W.I. housekeeper scheme, and trusted that members would, take full advantage of the privileges offered. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs S. M. Jackman (reelected) ; committee, Mesdapies A. W. Bremer, E. A. Fitzgibbon, W. R. Morgan, J. A. Paddy, J. Regan, F. J. Tempero, E. Vaughan, L. Vaughan, G. Walsh, A. C. Watson, R. Weenink, R. Ireland.
