COMMUNIST DEFEATED AT POLL
AUCKLAND WATERSIDE WORKERS (P.A. ) AUCKLAND, March 31. The chairman of the New Zealand Communist Party (Mr A. Drennan) is no longer vice-president of the Auckland 'branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union. He was defeated by a narrow majority by Mr N. Donaldson, representing the more moderate group in last, week’s poll. The national president of the union (Mr H. Barnes) was re-elected president of the Auckland branch by a comfortable majority over Mr J. Connor. Mr R. E. Jones retained the secretaryship with a large majority over the candidate sponsored by the militants (Mr D. Cameron). The counting of votes for the 39 candidates for the nine executive seats will probably he finished during the week-end.
