FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” April 1, 1898). Borough Council The ordinary meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr S. Reid) and Messrs Bird, Collins, Paul, Davis, and Thomas. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Hanmer, Baker, and Sealy. The Mayor reported the debit balance at' the bank to be £1664 9s 5d and the income received from all sources .since last meeting £92 17s lOd, of which. £l9 had been rates collected, £27 rents, and £3O auctioneers’ licences. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” April 1, 1923). Boxing Contest —A large crowd of enthusiastic supporters of boxing assembled in the King Edward Barracks, Christchurch, last night to witness the contest between Brian McCleary, of Christchurch, and Laurie Cadman, of Auckland, for the professional • light-heavy-weight championship, and a purse of £2OO. The attendance was 2500. McCleary retained the championship, after a fight which" lasted seven rounds, and was his all the way. Cadman’s seconds threw in the towel in the seventh round, when their man was absolutely done".
