NIGHTMARE RIDE IN TRAIN
OTTAWA, March 15. Four hundred passengers in a 70-mile-an-hour train had a nightmare ride for a mile recently. The train was running from Ottawa to Toronto at full speed when one of the engine piston-rods shattered and the flange of a main drive wheel was torn off. Flying pieces of metal pierced' a lighting gas tank, and flames shot out from under the baggage car. With the brakes full on and all wheels skidding, the train slid for a mile along the rails. The engine lurched perilously every yard of the way, as the dangling piston rod" repeatedly caught in the ties of the track. When the train stopped, the friction of the slide had worn flat one side of the wheels of every carriage.
