SUBMARINE SEEN OFF COAST
U.S. NAVY ABANDONS SEARCH SAN FRANCISCO, March 29. The Navy to-day abandoned the search for a'foreign submarine reported to have been sighted 60 miles south-west of San Francisco at dawn yesterday. Reconnaissance planes reported that no trace of,* the vessel was found in an intensive combing of the shipping lanes. The submarine was seen by the captain of a Pan-American clipper plane. Moscow radio to-day quoted a Tass News Agency denial of reports that Russian submarines were off the American shores.
Last Thursday the United States Navy Secretary, Mr Sullivan, stated that submarines, “not belonging to any nation Avest of the iron curtain” had been, sighted off American shores. The Tass Agency saicl: “Several American newspapers' have taken up Mr Sullivan’s -statement, and are disseminating sensational ■ rumours to the effect that Russian submarines have been sighted near the United States coasts. The Tass Agency has been authorised to deny these reports ae an. absurd and grossly slanderous invention calculated to deceive American public opinion.
