DEATH PENALTY FOR MURDER

MINISTER DEFENDS ABOLITION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 25. Experience in New Zealand had not shown that the abolition of the death penalty had been responsible for an increase in the number of murders, said the Minister of Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) to-day, commenting on a recommendation by the Federation of the New Zealand Justices’ Association that the death penalty should he reinstated. Mr Mason said that the Dominion’s experience with abolition had not been disadvantageous, but as far as one could say that there had been any change, that change had been favourable. This also applied to other countries which had abolished the death penalty. He could find only one state —ill America —that had reverted to capital punishment.
