PIPE BAND CONTEST

B Grade Quickstep ASHBURTON THIRD (P.A.) DUNEDIN, March 27. The New Plymouth Caledonian Society's pipe band won the B grade quickstep contest at Carisbrook this afternoon by a narrow margim from the Auckland and District Highland Pipe Band and the Ashburton County Scottish Society's Pipe Band. Jt was the first day of the Dominion pipe band championship centennial content, which opened in the morning with a church parade on the oval. There was an attendance of at least 7000.

The contest, which is the first to be held in Dunedin since 1933, has attracted bands from as far north as Auckland and as far south as Invercargill, and there are at least 600 pipers in the 29 bands competing. Nineteen bands took part in the first day of the contest, and they revealed a surprisingly high standard, particularly on the military side, the maximum points for which were 200 against 100 for music.
