RECAPTURED FOR BRITAIN
INTERNATIONAL HEIGHT RECORD
LONDON, March 25
Group Captain John Cunningham, in a Do Havilland Vampire fighter, jetpropelled, reached a height of 59,492 feet, establishing a new international record.
The previous record was 56,017 feet, which in Italian established in 1938.
Group Captain Cunningham, who is De 1-lavilland’s Chief test pilot, said there were no difficulties. “I just flew the plane to the highest point it would go. it took 32 minutes to go up and 2S to come down.” The Minister of Supply, Mr G. R. Strauss, congratulated Group Captain Cunningham and the De Havilland Company on recapturing for Britain the International altitude record.
