“COLD WAR” BUDGET

CONGRESS URGED TO ACT WASHINGTON, March 25. The Secretary of Defence, Mr James Forrestal, asked Congress to-day to approve a “cold war” military Budget of 14,000,000,000 dollars. He also asked for an authorised increase of 349,500 in the personnel of the armed forces, whose authorised total strength is 1,732,0001 The administration also asked Congress for power to draft nonveterans in the 19-25 years age group and for universal military training as a long-range measure to bulwark the nation’s defence. Mr Forrestal’s budget calls for 3,000,000,000 dollars more than Mr Truman requested when submitting the defence estimates in January, and provides for the purchase of 3000 extra aircraft.
