MR SEMPLE AND WATERSIDERS
UNION OFFICIALS' STATEMENT
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 26. Allegations that the Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple) had misrepresented the position in his cable message to the Premier of Queensland (Mr E. M. Hanlon), and that he had replied to Australian Communists and not to the Australian Waterside Workers’ Union, were made on Thursday by the secretary of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr T. Hill) speaking on behalf of the president of the union (Mr H. Barnes) and himself. Because of this the reply from Mr Hanlon was of negligible value, said Mr Hill.
The Minister of Works and Mr Hanlon had apparently replied to the Australian Communist Party, and when Mr Semple replied to the Australian Waterside Workers’ Union a more reasoned answer might be obtained. Mr Hill added that the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union had no connection with any Communist Party, but it had good trade relations with the Australian union.
