STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED
ATTEMPTED COUP ON BIAK BATAVIA, March 24. According to the Aneta News Agency, a sta'te of emergency was declared on March 14 on Biak Island, off the north coast of Dutch New Guinea, following an attempted coup by Indonesian extremists. The situation is now under control. Forty Indonesians were arrested and further arrests are expected. Biak was the Allied wartime base for the operations leading to the invasion of the Philippines.
