Proposed Return to Italy

NOTHING TO DO WITH ELECTIONS (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright): (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Mar. 24. The proposal to’’ return Trieste to Italy had nothing to do with the Italian elections, Mr Ernest Bevin told a Labour questioner who asked, in the House of Commons whether it would not have - $ ' been better to submit the proposals to the security council in spite of the imminence of the Italian elections.

Mr Bevin added that it was understood when the treaties on Trieste were signed that the British would evacuate Trieste within four months of the date of the signing. Britain had been unable to do so because of lack of agreement on the establishment of a freo territory, and the Powers had decided to attempt to break the deadlock by the present proposal. / He; ;suji<s tjhe tripartite declaration on Trieste proposed that any arrangement the Powers reached for ro vision of the relevant clauses would go before the Security Council.
