AERODROME HOUSES

Council to Lease Six Units

ARMY BUILDINGS TO BE MOVED Arrangements for the leasing of the buildings on the Ashburton aerodrome proper were finalised in an interview with the Ministry of Works in connection with transit housing on the aerodrome, said the Town Clerk (Mr R. C. Major) in his report to the Ashburton Borough Council last evening.

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research building on the aerodrome (six units, plus other buildings) would be leased to the council for £l5O per year. The council would be required to maintain them while leasing them, and it would be necessary to separate the buildings from the aerodrome, Mr Major continued. He considered that a tliree-strand wire fence would be sufficient to segregate the houses. He had also applied for two other buildings on the aerodrome proper to be gifted to the council. The buildings on the property owned by Mr Sim were to be gifted to the council, but the Commissioner ot Works (Mr E. R. McKillop) had advised that until an up-to-date valuation had been completed, the amount the -council would be required to pay could not be determined. The basis of assessment of the amount would be tliai it meet the cost of conversion and improvements carried out by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, to the extent that such work was suitable for and adaptable to Iran sit housing requirements. In the meantime the Commissioner asked the council to accept the proposal in principle'. Councillors, in accepting the proposals in principle, commented favourably on the suggested terms (£l5O per year) for the leasing of the buildings on the aerodrome proper. The Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) pointed out that if the council took over the buildings on Mr Sim’s property, they would have to find a 'Situation for a transit housing site in the borough. The cost of transporting the buildings from the aerodrome to tile site chosen would he borne by the Government.
