FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 22, 189 S). Lawn Tennis —A large crowd assembled at the Ashburton Lawn Tertnis Club’s courts on Tuesday to witness a match between the Victoria Tennis Club (Temuka) and the local club. The Victoria Club having an unbeaten record in South Canterbury, some good tennis Avas expected, and those present were not disappointed, as the play Avas of a high order, and many of the games Avere very closely contested. The match resulted in a win for the local club, by the. narrow margin of three games, although OAving to the early departure of the train, some of the sets AVere unfinished. \ ■■ — 1 TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 22, 1923). Rifle Shooting Miniature rifle shooting in Ashburton and County is gaining in popularity and most cjubs report increased memberships. The presentation of a County Challenge Shield by the County Council has done much to increase interest in the sport, and matters relating to the shield Avill he discussed at to-night’s meeting of the Ashburton Miniature Rifle Club.
