PAY AND CONDITIONS IN BANKS
EMPLOYEES TO SEEK NEW TERMS (P.A.) WELLING ON, March 19. By 1295 votes to 593, in a secret ballot members of the New Zealand Bank Officials'' Union have decided to apply for an industrial agreement to cover bank officers. A vote was taken after the circulation among members of a statement of the pros and cons of seeking an industrial agreement. The decision to take a. ballot followed dissatisfaction among hank staffs with the. attitude of managements to salary and classification proposals submited through the New Zealand Bank Officers’ Guild. Bank officers in a similar ballot in 194:0 rejected by 1384 votes to (ill a proposal that, an award should he applied for. A committee of the union in an outline of the proposals for an agreement issued with the ballot said that the terms in mind were similar 1o those enjoyed by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Avhich provided for a. salary scale now reaching £6OO a year in the twenty-first .year, a classification system of promotion, appeal boards, and disciplinary appeal hoards.
