MANUS ISLAND

Chinese Defying Civil Authorities DEFENCE PERIMETER FORMED (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright). (Rec. 12.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Armed Chinese on Manus Island are defying Australian rule there says the Port Moresby correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” Three hundred Chinese have formed themselves into an armed unit, and are defying the Australian Civil Administration. These Chinese have formed a defence perimeter, and established machine-gun posts. They are claiming extraterritorial rights, and are resisting attempts by administration officers to arrest some of them for civil offences. The Chinese have grenades, tommyguns and plenty of ammunition. Twenty armed native police, in charge of Australian police officers, will leave Port Moresby to-day by air for Manus Island to reinforce the civil administration.
