RAM FAIR

Sales Durinp 1 Afternoon

DEMAND FOR FINE-WOOLLED SHEJEF

The Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual ram fail continued yesterday afternoon with the sale of Leicesters, Romney Marsh, Ryaland and other classes of flock rams. Bidding, as in the Southdown section reported yesterday, was keen | for good lines. P. Letliam (Winchj more) topped the sales in the Border Leicester section with two at 11 llgns. The demand was- distinctly in favour of fine-woolled rams which met with a ready sale. . A few pens were passed in at auction. The demand for good quality English Leicesters was fairly good, although about eight pens did not reach the reserve placed on them. W. Lucas (Winchmore) obtained the best price of lOlgns. Romneys met with a limited demand although there was a proportion of buyers who were interested in the breed. After their requirements had been met only the best rams com manded interest. Some typical specimens of the breed were entered by Colin Gallagher, a breeder from May field, who obtained the top price of 15Igns for one-shear and also sold two others at llSgns. Ryelands met with a fair demand, and sold at prices ranging from four to 13gns, the last-mentioned figure being for three from A. C. Greenwood (Southbridge). Of the three Suffolk;? offered at the fair, one from J. Brook? (Brooleside) realised 14gus. The interest taken in the SouthdownBorder Leicester cross rams, of which there were 367, was a feature of tho fair. In the early stages prices were low, but as 'the sale progressed com petition became keen and there was a sharp rise in values. Many lots -sold at better than lOgns, the best price being 14j|giis for two offered on account of T. M. Wells, Raltaia.
