REMOVAL OF TAX FROM FOODS

STOCKS LEFT ON HAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 12. When the sales tax was removed from foodstuffs a few days ago many dealers, especially grocers, were left with big stocks of goods on which they had already paid the tax, said Mr J. T. Watts (Opposition, St. Albans) speaking on the Supplementary Estimates this evening. He asked the Minister of Finance (the Rt. Hon. W. Nash) to give consideration to their plight. Many of them would suffer a substantial financial loss. Mr Nash said a similar position arose each time alterations were made in customs duties. Retailers could continue to charge the higher price for goods on which the tax had been paid previously, but he admitted that competition against goods bought later with no tax on them would tend to send the price down.
