BASKETBALL

CANTERBURY WINS THE DOMINION CUP ; (P.A.) NELSON, August 31. The winners of three grades at the Dominion basketball championships — Canterbury, Tauranga and Nelson respectively—each went through the tournament unbeaten. Canterbury’s A grade team’s play was impressive and in most of their matches they were not fully extended. With 14 points Canterbury won the New Zealand Cuf>, while Auckland, with 10 points, took the Annie Brown Cup for runners-up. 1 They were followed by Manawatu, 8; Hawke’s Bay, 6; Otago, 4; Southland, 4; Wanganui, 3; Wellinton, 3.' At the conclusion of the tournment teams representing the North and South Islands met in a keenly contested match which resulted in a win for the North- Island by 17 goals to 12. Saturday’s results were as follows: —A grade: Canterbury 34, Wellington 18; Hawke’s Bay 30, Wanganui, 24; Auckland 23, Manawatu 19; Southland 20, Otago 13. • Association Meeting The annual meeting of the New Zea land Basketball Association elected the following officers:—Patroness, Lady Freyberg;' president, Mrs H. D. Muir (Wellington); executive, Mesdames H. D. Muir, A. Calder, A. Muir, R. M. Smith, Misses M. E. Armstrong and O. Wharton; hon. secretary, Miss O. B. Campbell; hon. treasurer, Miss M. E. Armstong. The Council discussed the desirability of breaking the championships into two sections on account of the increasing number of entries, but no action was taken. The Council decided on the following definition of a major association: “A major association shall be one with 100 or more teams, which lias a team playing in the first grade and which has one or more affiliated sub-associations. Previously given major status, Auckland, Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay, Otago, Southland and Wellington shall retain that status.”

The New Zealand Basketball Association announces that tlie following New Zealand team has been selected to play Australia in Dunedin in the first test in August of next year:— Forwards: M. Defenders: J. Hickey (Auckland), L. Black (Canterbury), N.‘Baxter (Auckland), D. Cockerton (Matamata). Reserves: B. Avery (Wellington), B. Bridgland (Hawke’s Bay), A. Clark (Canterbuiy) I. Jenninge (Southland), M. Leask (Manawatu), C. Thompson (Auckland) L. McCann (Hawke’s Bay), M. Barrett (Canterbury) and F. Eglinton (Manawatu). TOURNAMENT AT METHVEN Methven won the senior grade and Springburn the junior, grade in a basketball tournament played in the Methven Domain on Saturday.
