ANZAC DAY AT LAURISTON

UNVEILING OF ROLL OF HONOUR A handsome roll of honour bearing the names of two servicemen who gave their lives and 29 men and women from the district who served in World War 11., was unveiled at the Anzac Day service at. the Lauriston Soldiers’ Memorial Hall on Friday. In a hall bedecked with flags and flowers this year’s service was one of the most impressive ever held in Lauriston. Immediately after the singing of the National Anthem, the chairman of the function (Mr C. A. Fyl’e) referred to the* loss sustained by the district ana county in the death o: Mr IT. J. Crothers, who had been chairman of the Lauriston Soldiers’ Memorial Hal Committee from its inception until only 18 days previously. Those present stood in silence out of respect to the late Mr Crothers and in sympathy with the relatives. The need for unity amongst the people of New Zealand was emphasised by Mr R. G. Gerard, M.P., in tlie course of a speech, in which he also called upon everyone to be worthy of the sacrifice of the men whose names were on the memorial. Mr Gerard introduced Mrs H. J. Crothers, who officially unveiled the “i oil of honour.” Address by Former British Padre Mr Fyfe then introduced the Rev. B. K. Bond. 0.8. E., M.C., of Rakaia, commenting' that Mr Bond had served in the British forces as a padre from World War I to World War 11. Mr Bond conducted the religious aspect of the service as well ae giving an address dealing with his associations with the Anzacs from Gallipoli until Greece in the more recent struggle. • The address was of special interest to, and was much appreciated by ex-servicemen. Wreath-s were laid by Messrs J. B. Daley (World War I), and J. Daley (World War II.), father and son, and the school wreath was placed in position by Rliona Sides. Musical accompaniment for the singing of hymns was supplied partly by members of the Ashburton Silver Band under its conductor (Mr R. Milligan) and partly by Mr Ted Hooper at the piano. The Service concluded with -he sounding of the Last Post and Reveille by Mr Milligan. Meeting of Women’s Institute There was a good attendance at the April meeting of the Lauriston Women’s Institute. The president (Mrs J. A. Mackie) was in the chair. Motions of sympathy were carried with Mesdames 11. J. Crothers and L. L. Richards, members standing in silence. It was decided to send a letter of cheer to Mrs V. Boag who is in hospital. The motto “May life be like a garden with flowers of friendship spread,’ was read by Mrs L. Mills and the roll call was a recipe. Regret was expressed at the departure of Mesdames A. Bennett and F. Hampton. A letter was received. from Miss Betty Hooper, thanking the institute member-3 for visits to her while she was in hospital. Mrs Pearce, executive member, addressed the meeting on Institute matters. An interesting demonstration on floral work was given by Miss M. Lill (Willowby). Many pretty articles of the work were displayed by Miss Lill. Competitions resulted as follow: Bloom, Miss J. Skinner 1, Mrs Mackie 2, Mrs J. Pluck 3; vase, Mrs J. G. Marshall 1, Miss Joyce Hayward 2, Mrs Mackie and Mrs C. A. Fyfe equal 3; thrift article, Mrs Pluck 1, Mrs Fyfe 2; pikelets, Mrs Doak 1, Mrs Marshall 2, Mrs Fyfe 3.

EALING WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

INTERESTING TALK ON CHINA A well-attended meeting of the Ealing W.I. listened with great interest to Mrs H. Howie, of the China Inland Mission, who spoke of life in China and of her experiences in an internment camp during the war years. Mrs D. Brodie, on behalf of the members, thanked her. Three new members, were welcomed, Mesdames D. Brodie, Clibborn and Gillies. An invitation to the Rangitata birthday party was received and accepted. An interesting report on the half-yearly federation meeting was given by Mrs A. Lamb. The motto for the month was “Towering genius disdains a beaten path.” The competitions results were; Reach jam, Mrs W. Giddings and Miss p. Withell (equal) 1;' jar of autumn foliage, Mrs W. Giddings and Miss P. Withell (equal) 1; heaviest marrow, •Mrs D. Brodie 1, Mrs A. Lamb 2; single bloom, Mrs Giddings 1; truss, Mrs W. Giddings 1, Miss P. Withell 2; shrub, Mrs W. Giddings 1, Miss P. P. Withell 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Forsyth and Mee, while Mrs W. Giddings presided. MAYFIELD NOTES ANNUAL MEETING OF W.D.F.U. The annual meeting of the Mayfield Women’s Division of Federated Farmers wns held in the Lodge Room recently, with the president (Mrs J. D. Murdoch) in the chair and a good attendance. i Motions of sympathy were passed to Mesdames H. Patterson, W. Mably and Frost. Mrs H. J. Lilley gave a comprehensive report on tiie recent executive meeting and it was decided to do the catering for the dog trials which are to be held on May 12, 13 and 14 at Surrey Hills, all members being asked to help with this effort. Mrs Hayman (executive president) gave a short talk, stressing the need to support the “Community Chest.” The annual report stated that £lO had been donated to headquarters building fund, £2 2s to executive and a mixed parcel for the leper appeal. A picnic was held at Timaru for Divi-

sion members’ children and fat has been collected. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £43 18s 4d. Sprays were presented to the president, secretary and treasurer and Mrs Hayman, who took the chair for the election of officers, which resulted: President, Mrs J. D. Murdoch; vicepresidents, Mesdames G. March, G. J. Murdoch and T. Taylor; secretary, Mrs A. Murdoch; assistant-secretary. Miss M. Taylor; treasurer, Mrs H. J. Lilley; delegates to executive, president, treasurer and Mrs Marsh; sales table, Mrs Ellery, snr.; competitions, Misses S. Murdoch and M. Taylor; auditor, Mr R. Bonisch. The competitions l'esulted: — Most things in match box, Mrs J. D. Murdoch i; Mrs Marsh 2, Mrs G. Ellery 3; bowl of dahlias, Mrs Joseph Murdoch 1; best bloom, Mrs J. D. Murdoch 1. Mrs Hayman presented the prizes for the year’s competitions as follow: General, Mrs J. D. Murdoch; flowers, Mrs Joseph Murdoch, vegetables, Mrs Marsh; cooking, Mrs Marsh. Farewell Function to Miss Fisher The Mayfield Band Hall was filled to capacity on Wednesday evening when a dance was held in honour of Miss Betty Fisher Avho is leaving the district on promotion as postmistress nt Tai Tapu. The Rev. J. G. Mathews presided and extended congratulations on the guest’s promotion and wished her all the best in her new sphere of work. On behalf of the residents and friends he presented Miss Fisher with a substantial cheque with which to get a momento of the occasion. Mr Joseph Murdoch for the Mayfield Tennis Club presented the guest with a fountain pen and Mr R. Bonisch for the local post office staff presented her with a silver cigarette case. Miss Z. Elms pinned a shoulder spray on Miss Fisher. . Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr R. Pratley with extras by Mr D. Histen. The master of cere'fnonies was Mr L. Lilley. A novelty waltz was won by Mr and Mrs H. R. Tasker.
