ASHBURTON RIVER

APPLICATION TO CATCHMENT BOARD (“Guardian” Reporter). Various applications in regard to the Ashburton River watershed came before yesterday’s, meeting of the South Canterbury Catch-* ment Board at Timaru.

Regarding a request for assistance to check erosion on the property of R. D. S. Burgess, Staveley, the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) reported that a pilot channel and diversion bank, costing £9O in all, would clear up the trouble. He. recommended that the interested parties be asked to arrange for the depositing of £3O with the board, after which application for subsidy could be made to the Soil Conservation Council. The engineer’s recommendation was approA'ed. Reporting on a complaint of flooding at Greenstreet, made by E. A. Fussell, the engineer stated that it was purely an internal problem, and recommended that no action be taken. The recommendation was adopted. N. G. Cartwright, Alford Forest Road, wrote asking that steps be taken to check river erosion on his property. It Avas decided to make a pilot stream diversion, fill in the eroded bed with spoil and anchor willows near the bank, the engineer commenting that it Avas purely a river control measure.
