STOPBANK REPAIRS

SOUTH BRANCH OF HINDS RIVER (“Guardian” Reporter) Repairs to a stopbank, originally constructed by the Ashburton County Council, at the property of Mr R. J. Anderson, on the south branch of the Hinds River, are to be carried out at a cost of £ 150, according to a decision of the South Canterbury Catchment Board at Timaru yesterday.

The divisional engineer at Ashburton, Mr J. S. Houston, reported that water leaving tlie river in the locality would flow over the property owned by Mr Anderson and then for a considerable distance along tlie South Hinds Road. Three parts of the stopbank, for a total distance of seven chains, had been damaged. He recommended the construction of three pilot channels opposite the weakened portions of the bank and the repairing of the bank \fith material so excavated. This would cost approximately £l5O and could he completed in a week.

On a further recommendation by the board’s engineer, Mr G. R. Milward, it was decided to apply for a £2 for £1 subsidy, the owner to-be asked for a contribution towards the cost.

“It is apparent that the owner and the Ashburton County Council should together find the local body share,” added Mr Milward.
