SURPRISE RESULT

U.S. DAVIS CUP PAIR DEFEATED MELBOURNE, December 4. The greatest shock of the Victorian tennis championships was the defeat to-day of the American Davis Cup pair, Kramer and Schroeder, by Bromwich and Long in the semi-final of the doubles championship. The Aus* tralians won 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Bromwich was the outstanding played, the uncanny accuracy of his shots amazing his opponents and the gallery. He did not lose. a service. His placements were beyond criticism and he did not make more than a dozen errors throughout the match. At times he covered three-quarters of the court and, to the of Kramer and Schroeder, returned shots which they thought were going for outright winners. In the other semi-final the Americans Mulloy and Talbert heat Quist and Brown' 10-8, 6-4, 8-6. Earlier in .the day Quist and Brown eliminated Parker and Brown (America) in the quarter-finals 7-5, 6-3, 8-10, 10-8. Two members of the Australian Davis Cup squad, Dinny Pails and Adrian Quist, were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Victorian singles championship yesterday. Ted Schroeder <Araerica)' heat Pails 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and Gardnar Mulloy (America) beat Quist 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. In other quarter-finals W. Sidwell heat .T.
