Cr. M. D. McDowell was re-appointed by the Ashburton County Council yesterday as that body’s representative on the Technical High School Board.

Mr M. Heeiian, son of Mrs A. Heenan, 145 Wills Street, Ashburton, has been appointed Crown Counsel to the Palestine administration, with headquarters in Jerusalem. This is a British Colonial Service appointment.

A notice in last night’s Gazette appoints Mr W. L. Newnham, of the staff of the Ministry of Works, to be a member and chairman of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, in place of Mr T. G. G. Beck, who has resigned from the, council. — P.A.

Members of the Post and Telegraph Department at Ashburton met last evening to honour those of their number who are leaving the local staff on transfer or retirement. Mr J. A. Palmer, supervisor of the Telegraph Department, who leaves Ashburton on Monday to take up a similar position in Wellington, was presented with a wristlet watch. His place at Ashburton will be taken by Mr J. H. McKay, of Gore, who was stationed at Ashburton about 17 years ago. Mr W. G. R. Middlemass, who will leave shortly on transfer on promotion to Kaiapoi, was presented with a fountain pen and cigarette case, and Mr R. M. Dalgety, who will leave for Wellington, received a suitcase. Miss I. M. Walsh, who retired this week from the position of supervisor of the Ashburton telephone exchange was given a hanging mirror and a fountain pen. The presentations were made by the aeting-Postmaster (Mr G. Brown).
