OUTSTANDING MAN

TRIBUTES TO SIR W. NOSWORTHY Tributes to the late Sir William Nosworthy, a former member of the council, were paid at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Ctitmcil this morning, and it was decided to place on recort? councillors’ regret at the passing of one of the most outstanding public men of the county and of the whole of New Zealand. In moving on these lines, Cr. W. G. Gallagher emphasised the great loss suffered in the death of Sir William who was a man of sterling character, brilliant ability and a splendid neighbour. He was held in the highest respect, and had given the greatest service to both the county and the Dominion. His long terms iji Ministerial posts were a clear indication of the great ability he showed, and Avere an additional proof of his popularity. Cr. J. Carr, supporting the motion, pointed out that Ministers of Agriculture rarely held office more than dnce, yet Sir William was re-appointed again and again. This single fact of his long tenure in office was a great tribute. He had always done, his best for both the individual farmer and the Dominion as a whole. . . Other speakers added tributes ana the motion was carried by all present standing in silence.
