PRICES OF HAIRCUTS AND SHAVES

APPLICATION FOR INCREASE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 3. The total price of a shave and haircut may be raised to 3s 6d if an application made by the Ne\v Zealand Retail Tobacconists’ and Hairdressers’ Federation to the Price Tribunal is successful. The hairdressers are asking for an increase of sixpence on the present charges for shaving and hairdressing. This Avould make the price of a shave Is 6d, and a haircut 2s. Increased overhead costs are given by the hairdressers as the* basis of their demand. The secretary of the Wellington Provincial Hairdressers and Tobacconists’ Association, Mr A. L. Knowsley, said that overhead costs in the hairdressing industry had risen since 1938 by. more than 80 per cent. No increase had been asked in the price of men’s hairdressing since 1936. The application had been before the tribunal for some months, Mr Knowsley said, but no decision had been announced. In view of this a special meeting will be held in Wellington on October 15 by members of the trade to discuss what further action th.e industry is justified in taking to meet the situation.

In comparison with hairdressing charges overseas, said Mr Knowsley, he did not think the hairdressers’ claims excessive. In other countries extra charges were made for hair oil, powder and other accessories used in the saloons. This Avas not done in NeAV Zealand.
