BANANA PLANTATIONS SUFFER (Rec. 12.20) BRISBANE, This Day. A series of fires raging • m the banana plantations are threatening the township of Mapleton, on the south coast of Queensland. The fires are out of control and have swept to within 2000 yards of the township. Heavy damage has been done to the plantations and to valuable stands ot hardwood. Isolated homes are being evacuated, and there have been many narrow escapes. So far few houses have been destroyed.
