SMART RESCUE

DAKOTA DIVES INTO SEA DARWIN, September 6. When both engines failed a R.A.A.F. Douglas Dakota crashed into the sea a mile from shore. Splendid rescue work resulted in all five of the crew being saved. Only 20 minutes after the news of the crash was received a Catalina was diving over the men floating on the wreckage. The Dakota was on a test flight when it requested that a landing strip be cleared. One engine was on fire and apparently the other failed almost immediately as the plane dived into the sea. A Catalina took off from a cold start, after assembling a crew and dropped a dinghy to the crew of the Dakota. The men were rescued soon after by launches and are now in the Darwin Hospital.
