THE ASHBURTON MARKET Owing to unfavourable weather, the demand for seed wheat has slackened off, but further orders for peas, barley and linseed for spring sowing are being received, states this week’s report of Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants. Markets generally remain quiet. Practically all milling wheat has been marketed. A good inquiry exists for Garton oats, but few lines are now available. Perennial ryegrass of high purity and germination, suitable for export, is in good demand. The same applies to red and white clover. Two heavy shipments of potatoes will be made this week to Auckland. This should satisfy the northern demand for several weeks. Sales for next month’s delivery are difficult to make. No orders for seed potatoes are being received. Other markets are unchanged. Range of Prices The range of prices is as follows, all on trucks at country stations, sacks extra, unless otherwise stated: Wheat —Tuscan 7s 5d per bushel Hunters 7s 7d, Velvet 7s 9d, Marquis 7s lid (all f.0.b.). Plain and unfinished wethers caused the market to drag at times. Half way through, ewes firmed further at times to 4s a head. Good wethers were slightly filmed until the last two races when a general easing set in. Ewes then went back sharply to last week’s values and wethers a shade lower. Heifers and cows were not so plentiful and these experienced a better market than for some weeks. Quality was good but the sale dragged ip the early stages. Steers were down by more than 10s, but the market improved toward the end. There was a firm tone in the buying of cows and heifers throughout. Butchers did not appear to be operating heavily.
