APPLICATION TO INDUSTRY IMPORTANT CONFERENCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Scientific theory and its application to New'Zealand industry are being discussed at a three- > day conference now in session in Wellington. Those taking part are members of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and the New Zealand section of the Royal Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland. Delegates are from, all parts of New Zealand, and include members of the scientific staffs: of Government departments. i Opening the conference, the Minister in Charge of Scientific and Industrial research, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, said if NeAV Zealand was.to make the fullest possible progress, scientific research Avas essential. The Gov* ernment’s interest Avas indicated by increased provision for research, Avhich had almost doubled to reach its present figure of £60,000. Recent Avork included a complete soil survey of the North Island, and a similar survey was being made in the south. This Avould be of great value in land utilisation. Mr Sullivan said the Government’s aim Avas to find a Avay to improvements, .and then hand over production to those capable and willing to undertake the work.

Dr. H. E. An-nett, president of the New Zealand branch of the Royal Institute of Chemistry, dealt Avitli the scientific aspect of farming and its relation to increased production. He discussed the need for correcting deficiencies .and control of pests, and said that each was. important in the scientists’ task.
