FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 28, 1896). Combined Social...On Friday evening a very successful social was held in Mr R,‘ Oakley’s granary for three purposes: (1) To celebrate the opening (with a roll of 27) of the Chertsey side school; (2) to welcome the mistress, Miss Tulley; (3) to present Mr R. Oakley with a handsome writing desk and Mrs Oakley with a fine dinner set by way of showing their gratitude to them for conducting a Sunday t School in their house for the past years.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 28, 1921). Little Unemployment,—There have been rumours of a certain amount ot unemployment in Ashburton latel> though inquiries made to-day scarcely justify the assumption that- the position is very acute. On account of the general slackness of trades . such as building, etc., a few men have been put off, but the local firms have been endeavouring as far as possible to retain their full staffs.
