SALES TAX PAID BY RETAILERS

EXPLANATION BY MR NASH , : '* (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. In the House of Representatives today Mr E. P. Aderman (Opposition, New Plymouth) in an urgent question, asked the Minister of Finance (the Rt. Hon. W. Nash) whether retailors would be refunded amounts of sales tax which had been paid before August 16 on goods which were now exempt. Mr Aderman said retailers were obliged to pay sales tax on goods which had not been delivered, and if the retailer were not reimbursed > the increased cost would be passed on to the consumer. Mr Nash replied that where the tax had been correctly paid at the time o£ purchase by the retailer from a licensed wholesaler in New Zealand, or at the time of importation and entry by the retailer, there was no means by which a refund of such tax could now be granted. However, sales tax was not payable on goods covered by the resolutions which were imported . before August 16, but entered for home consumption on or after that date.
