MEAT COUPONS SAVED

WEEK’S RATION FOR TWO MILLION IN BRITAIN PROGRESS OF CAMPAIGN i (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. “New Zealanders have found from their own rationed supplies one week's ration of meat for 2,000,000 Britons and one week’s ration of butter for 480,000 Britons," said the chairman of the National Famine Emergency Committee, Mr T. N. Smallwood, tonight, commenting on the five months’ progress of the couponsaving campaign. In these 20 weeks, he said, more than 3,930,000 meat coupons and 175,000 butter coupons had been contributed. The monetary value of the meat alone was nearly £50,000.

Support for the campaign now appeared to be increasing. For the first tw T o days this week 9943 butter coupons and 152,4G6 meat coupons had been given. So far during the campaign smaller centres had done better than larger centres, Christchurch being the only main centre to be. placed in the first four in ’weekly totals, Gisborne had recorded a great achievement, having been first eight times, second six times, and third twice. It had been hoped to have leaflets dropped from the Aries as it flew over New Zealand, but this proved impossible because of modifications to the structure of the aircraft. An effort was now being made to have a R.N.Z.A.F. aircraft over various towns at the same time as the Aries, and leaflets would be dropped ‘from the New Zealand machine.

During the last week, 5193 butter and 163,503 meat coupons were saved, 'Gisborne being first for the week. -
