COUNTY CENTRES

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION The annual ball of the Mount Somers coalminers held on Friday evening, was again an outstanding success. The ballroom was tastefully decorated with evergreens and coloured lights. Music was suplied by Cooks’ orchestra and Mr W. Beckley was master of ceremonies. Mr A. Dalton, on behalf of the miners, welcomed the-guests. Mr R. Burnett congratulated the miners upon their high standard of service, a service he felt sure had been unexcelled by any coalminers elsewhere, and he was proud to be the employer of such a splendid band of loyal workers. He was also proud of the fine record of war service given by the staff. Referring to housing conditions, Ml Burnett said he hoped the Government would soon build more houses at Mount Somers, so that the miners might have the homes and amenities they rightly deserved.

Women’s Institute

There was a Mir attendance of members at the August meeting of the Mount Somers Women’s Institute. Mrs F. W. Gifkins presided. One new member was welcomed. A donation was made to the Crippled Children’s Society. A letter was read from the link in Hellesden, and plans were made for future parcels to be sent. Mrs F. W. Gifkins gave her report on the recent conference in Wellington. An invitation was received to a party at Anama, The tin of honey for the birthday parly was sent to , the soldiers’ ward at the Ashburton Hospital. Tentative plans were made., to hold a fancy dress party early in October. A competition for ginger-nuts was held and these were forwarded to the link in England. Competitions, judged by Mrs D. Chambers (Methven) and Mrs L. Law resulted in Tuis gaining 25 points and Kiwis 21 points.

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Lynnford brancli of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was, held recently. Mrs Maekay presided over a good attendance. The secretary was asked to write letters of cheer to several members who are in hospital. The spring flower show to be held in October was discussed. Mrs Maekay gave an excellent report on the recent Women’s Division conference held in Wellington. Competitions resulted: Saucer posy, arranged at meeting (9.): Mrs L. Noble and Mrs Porter (equal) 1, Mrs Dell and Miss P. Bishop (equal) 2, Mrs 'Bishop 3; Nut Loaf (5): Mrs Bishop 1, Mrs Chalmers 2, Mrs Porter and Mrs Dell (equal) 3; Jug Covers (8): Mrs Mooney 1, Mrs Hill 2, Mrs Dell and Mrs L. Noble (equal) 3; Leeks (7): Mrs L. Noble 1, Mrs Hill 2, Mrs Mooney 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Chalmers, Noble and Miss P. Bishop.

PRESENTATION AT MAYFIELD

MRS W. K. DELLOW HONOURED In appreciation of her work as secretary of the Mayfield Sub-Branch of the Red Cross Society over 19 years, Mrs W. K. Dellow was recently presented with a handbag. Mesdames J. J. Mulligan and R. Austin spoke of the fine service given by Mrs Dellow during her long term of office.
