BIG MODERN HOTEL

AUCKLAND PLAN PROPOSALS PUT BEFORE MINISTER (P.A.), . AUCKLAND, Aug. 2G. A proposal to erect a large modern residential hotel to servei tourists and visitors to Auckland on the site of the present Hotel Cargen was presented to the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) to-day. The cost of the hotel and furnishings will exceed £350,000, and a permit to start building operations in about a year’s time was sought from the; Government. As spokesman for the deputation, Mr K. B. Myers pointed out that the project was beyond the resources of any one organisation. The interests represented, New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., Dominion Breweries, Ltd., Hancock and Company, Ltd., and Campbell and Ehrenfried, Ltd., -had agreed to pool their resources by sharing the responsibility equally for the financial obligations so that the enterprise could proceed without delay. , Mr Myers referred to the acute shortage of hotel accommodation. They fully appreciated the necessity for providing houses for former servicemen and others in priority to all other works, but if their inquiries from what was probably the highest authority on building construction in New Zealand had not convinced them that a permit for the proposed hotel would not interfere with the housing programme, they would not be seeking the permit. They asked Mr Parry to place the request before the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser). The Minister thanked the deputation for the sense of responsibility they had shown in present and future needs, and also for emphasising their appreciation of homes having the first priority. He promised to bring the proposal before the Cabinet and the! Prime Minister at the earliest poss-i ible moment. > ;
